Puma interprets the BMW GINA Light concept as a shoe

BMW Designworks is reviving the futuristic idea behind the automaker’s fabric-covered GINA Light Visionary Model concept from 2008, but now you can wear the roadster's sci-fi styling on your feet. Puma’s new X-Cat Disc stems from a collaboration with the German automaker's design division, and the silver shoes go on sale at select stores worldwide on July 1.

“The approach was to look at every aspect of making a shoe and to try and reimagine it. Freeing yourself of what is here now can be an enjoyable and rewarding exercise. Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, said about the X-Cat.

Designworks treats creating the shoe like styling a car. Puma’s Disc tech is somewhat like a space frame chassis because it replaces traditional laces with a rotating knob to tighten or loosen internal wires. Similar to the shape-shifting GINA, the designers cover this framework with a single piece of stretchable material. While the fabric looks similar, it's more durable and breathable for the X-Cat than on the earlier concept car. Puma also adds laser-cut perforations to the exterior, which adds more style and further increases ventilation for your feet.

The bottom of the shoe features another automotive-inspired design element. BMW sees the sole as the engine of the foot. To evoke this concept, the designers make this section look like interconnecting gears. The automaker also puts its famous roundel next to Puma's leaping cat logo here to show their collaboration.
