Originally came out as a 2 door coupe, the 3-Sereies has come a long way to include 2 doors convertible, 4 door sedan, 5 door hatchback, and 5 door station wagon. Despite 2016 updates of the existing 3-Series, BMW already has its team of engineers working on next generation model, which was spied doing test runs in the harsh Arctic.

2018 BMW 3-Series – Design Updates:

This front fascia is quite similar to the 7 Series, which has identical design cues. Longer hood, short rear deck, and a few other parts are reminiscent of current models. Round, big, bulging taillamps may represent some more development work in the pipeline for the final design to take shape.

According to sources, BMW 3-Series will be a blend of quality, craftsmanship, character, visual angles and substance (as in BMW grade materials).

Inheritance:

The 2018 BMW 3-Series will be based on BMW’s new Cluster Architecture (also known as CLAR): a future platform for upcoming models. This new architecture is said to make use of high strength aluminum, steel, and carbon fiber in desired proportions for significant reduction of body fat. Cluster Architecture boasts of further flexibility, versatile sub-modules or clusters, which are versatile enough to be extensively adjustable in adaptability, content and size.

No official details have been received regarding interior design cues, nor has it been possible to take a peek beneath what looms beneath the heavy camouflage. However, a digital instrument panel is suspected to form the spine of all electronic operations.

Technology and Safety Suite:

As mentioned above, a high-tech digital panel will supposedly form a backbone of 2018 BMW 3-Series; upgraded technology kit will boast of a large touch screen display mounted on the central console, TV quality instrument graphics, more encyclopedic heads up display. The touch screen interface will have supporting accessories like voice activation, gesture control in addition to touch capabilities, and the good old iDrive.

Even more, driver assists technologies like semi-autonomous software for driving on highways, self-acting overtakes capabilities in favorable conditions, remote control parking systems, autonomous braking systems when desired, monitoring of crossroads and turns, and stop-and-go traffic functions up to a speed of 40 miles an hour.

Some other significant upgrades include next generation active steering, switchable anti-roll bars, adjustable dampers, new torque vectoring system riding on Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Air suspension will, however, not be featured on 2018 BMW 3-Series.

2018 BMW 3-Series – More Attitudes, Better Performance:

The 2018 BMW 3-Series is expected to be powered by a wide variety of drivetrain choices:

  • A 2 liter, 4 cylinders, turbocharged unit with a possible capacity to generate 240 hp (328i model).
  • A 6 cylinder 3 liter turbocharged unit (340i models) will provide more punch than existing models: a straight increase in 30 ponies of raw output and 27 Newton meters of torque; total output is scaled at around 320 hp.
  • 330d and 340d models might not see any significant boost up, and will retain current classic BMW inline six-cylinder unit.
  • High-performance variants M3 and M4 will be available with inline 6 cylinder units (featuring water injection and e-chargers), making some mighty 425 hp.

Transmission and Fuel Economy:

No word has been yet received regarding the transmission of this beauty; neither is the case with figures regarding fuel economy. However, decreasing curb weight will definitely improve fuel economy.
