The Dodge Challenger has been largely untouched since it was introduced in 2008, but a new report is indicating we can expect major changes when the next-generation model is unveiled sometime around 2019.
According to Automobile Magazine, the redesigned Challenger will ride on the same rear-wheel drive platform that underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulia. This change will reportedly go a long way in improving the car's dynamics as drivers can expect better handling and a more nimble vehicle.
Engine options remain unconfirmed but the report says the car will continue to be offered with V6 and V8 engines. More interestingly, the publication says we can expect an upgraded Hellcat V8 engine that produces at least 750 horsepower.
For comparison, the current Challenger Hellcat has a supercharged 6.2-litre HEMI V8 engine that develops 707 hp and 650 pound-feet of torque. It enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour (0-96 kilometres per hour) in the "low three second range" before hitting a top speed of 199 mph (320 km/h).
In related news, the publication is reporting the Barracuda will be making a comeback as a convertible. The model will be heavily influenced by the Challenger but will reportedly be shorter and have unique sheetmetal.
